TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) recently activated Everbridge, a new mass notification and incident management system to support the FDEM mission of ensuring that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them and mitigate against their impacts. The new system also aids in the activation of Florida’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT) in preparing for and during a disaster. Everbridge has significantly reduced the amount of time it takes FDEM to notify staff, state agency Emergency Coordinating Officers and other response partners when the State Emergency Operations Center is activated.
“Communication is a critical element in preparing for and responding to a disaster, and Everbridge provides a comprehensive and reliable platform to ensure all of Florida’s emergency managers are properly informed,” said FDEM Director Bryan W. Koon. “Florida’s recent experience with Everbridge during Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Isaac proved the system’s effectiveness.”
The Everbridge system was used extensively during the state’s response to Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Isaac. As Hurricane Isaac threatened Florida, the SERT modified the partial activation of the State Emergency Operations Center in support of the Republican National Convention in Tampa to a full activation to prepare for potential impacts from, then tropical storm, Isaac. The Everbridge system allowed SERT leadership to easily reach those needed for the activation, determine who would be present for the initial briefings and who they would need to reach by conference call.
As part of its continuous effort to provide reliable emergency management services, FDEM underwent an extensive evaluation of the industry’s leading solutions and selected the Everbridge system. Key to this decision was the system’s overall resiliency and ability to initiate broadcasts to multiple contact paths from anywhere at any time, with the infrastructure to handle an event of any magnitude.
“At Everbridge, we understand the critical nature of our clients’ work and how imperative it is for them to use the most resilient, most comprehensive solutions available,” said Imad Mouline, chief strategy officer, Everbridge. “My team’s driving goal is to lead the emergency notification industry by developing the best solution in all notification categories and making all the tools completely interoperable. Our newest suite of tools provides the industry’s only complete package.”
