Glendale, Calif. – Dec. 3, 2013 – Team Rubicon, a disaster relief organization comprised of military veterans and medical professionals, has launched Operation: Seabird, a medical search and rescue mission in response to Super Typhoon Haiyan. The primary objectives of Operation: Seabird are facilitating search and rescue efforts and providing medical triage for a full-scale field hospital in Tacloban, the capital of the Philippine province of Leyte. Tacloban was the first city hit with Super Typhoon Haiyan’s 195 mile-per-hour winds.
Super Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Yolanda, made landfall in the Philippines on November 7, and left many regions without power, fresh water, or communications. It is estimated that up to 10,000 people have died as a result of the typhoon, and another 11 million have been affected, many of those left homeless. One of the first organizations to provide Haiyan relief, Team Rubicon deployed a search and rescue team of 15 veteran volunteers to the Philippines on Veterans Day. The group was accompanied by three members of Making Change, a veterans-based relief organization in Norway. A second group of Team Rubicon volunteers travelled to the Philippines on November 12.
Operation: Seabird volunteers are also delivering medical response kits supplied by Direct Relief, a nonprofit focused on providing global medical assistance, to Haiyan survivors. Team Rubicon plans to continue to gather feedback on ground conditions during the initial relief efforts, and adjust their response strategy and goals as the on-the-ground situation develops.
Everbridge provides Team Rubicon with a critical communication platform, allowing mission coordinators to communicate requests to volunteers, and to keep up-to-date on the needs and progress of field teams during missions. “Everbridge is proud to support Team Rubicon in their efforts to provide relief to those impacted by Super Typhoon Haiyan,” said Imad Mouline, chief technology officer, Everbridge. “Team Rubicon provides an indispensable service to the communities and people affected by this tragedy.”
Volunteers for Operation: Seabird were hand-selected based on a number of criteria, including medical and search and rescue certifications, Team Rubicon deployment history, and availability.
