The healthcare industry is currently undergoing a significant transition in light of a recent ruling by the Joint Commission, a certifying body for more than 21,000 hospitals and healthcare facilities in the U.S., which reversed a 2011 guideline that banned doctors and nurses from discussing patient care via text message, because of HIPAA privacy concerns. Under the Joint Commission’s new ruling, healthcare providers are now able to text clinical orders via HIPAA-secure messaging platforms, under certain parameters.
